The Great Wall of China reaches some 3,950 miles, constructed for defense. The Great Wall recognized by UNESCO and put on the World Heritage List in 1987. 50 miles north of Beijing you can visit the best preserved and most imposing section of the Great Wall at Badaling, which is over 2,625 feet above sea level, but the enormous magnitude and beauty of the wall can also be seen at Mutianyu, Jinshanling, and Simatai.
It took more than 1 million people and more than 10 years to finish the Great Wall which first began during the warring period of 476 - 221 B.C. At first the walls were built at some strategic points by different kingdoms to protect their own territories. Emperor Qin Shihuang, who was the first of the Qin Dynasty to unified China in 221 B.C, decided to join the walls together and create one Great Wall.
One of the bigbest cities on the Yangtze River is Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province in central China. The Yangtze River and the Han River join here, dividing the city into three towns: Hankou, Hanyang and Wuchang. Due to its advantageous geographical location, Wuhan has become a commercial center. Built over 3,500 years ago, Wuhan has rich natural and cultural resources. It provides easy access to many scenic spots, such as the the Snow Crystal Caves, Shennongjia, and the Three Gorges.
